 For Spring 4.x based web applications we can use the following stuff to add compression on response

Add the below dependency in pom.xml

<dependency>
   <groupId>net.sf.ehcache</groupId>
   <artifactId>ehcache-web</artifactId>
   <version>2.0.4</version>
</dependency>

Then in web.xml add the below filter declarion:

   <filter-name>GzipFilter</filter-name>
   <filter-class>net.sf.ehcache.constructs.web.filter.GzipFilter</filter-class>
